Feedback and Assignments

Viewing Instructor Feedback (click to reveal)

To find feedback on your graded assignments, click Grades > Assignment name > View Feedback (annotated feedback in a document) and/or Show Rubric (rubric scores and rubric comments). A blue dot next to View Feedback or Show Rubric indicates new feedback exists. Submission comments display on the right of the Dashboard and course homepage.

Late Work (click to reveal)

Sample 1

Assignments can be handed in up to midnight via canvas. All students should receive an email confirmation from me that I have received your work; otherwise, I did not get your assignment.
Every day an assignment is late there is a 5% penalty.
If a student plagiarizes or cheats, the student will have to meet with me.
Students can always ask for an extension on assignments for legitimate reasons, but you must ask for the extension before the deadline.
Every student has the opportunity to redo an assignment if they want a better grade.
Any student can come to me for extra guidance or assistance.

Sample 2

Homework assignments will not be accepted past the due date. However, you can delay submission of up to 3 homework assignments for a maximum of 24 hours each with no penalty. No more than 3 homework assignments may be submitted up to 24 hours late.

Essay drafts may be submitted up to 24 hours late and still receive full points, but a late draft will not receive feedback. Only drafts submitted by the due date will receive feedback. A late penalty of 10% per day, rounded up to the nearest whole point, will be assessed on all final drafts of essays.

Discussion Board Language (click to reveal)

A discussion board is a place for discussion, so we can write the way we talk, or if we are doing videos, we can talk in the way that is most comfortable for us in conversation. The discussion board is graded for the development of ideas, not for grammar or any other part of our spoken or written style. In your postings, please remember to be respectful of your colleagues. The idea is to have a discussion and not close down another person's ideas. If you experience difficulty in the discussions, please consult with your professor about how to work with the problem.

(Making the expectation for Edited Written English explicit will help students understand the requirements of the assignment. Giving resources to support students in using Edited Written English can help those who might not have a lot of practice or feedback in highschool for writing in this style.)

In formal assignments, please use Edited Written English conventions of grammar and punctuation. If you are not sure about something, you can consult the grammar and usage resources at the OWL at Purdue or you can download Grammarly (there is a free version) to your computer for more Edited Written English grammar and punctuation. If you are writing an essay, and you need help with a draft, you can visit the UCBA Writing Center, and the tutors there can work through your draft with you.

Assessment Feedback (click to reveal)

Quizzes

On quizzes, you will receive a score. You want to score 70% or higher on your quizzes. If you are able to take a quiz multiple times, it is a good idea to try for a higher score. If you can only take the quiz once, go back through the quiz and look at the questions you got wrong and make sure you know the correct answer so you can get the answer right on an exam.

Homework

Your instructor may put commentary on your homework. If you get feedback on your homework, make sure you understand the feedback and how to get the correct answer for the exam. If you do not understand the feedback, you should email your instructor so you can understand how to get the right answer. If you are able to revise your homework, use the feedback to help you revise and resubmit the assignment.

Papers

When you receive a paper with feedback it may be in the form of a rubric and/or feedback. You can access the feedback on a paper by going into Grades, clicking on the assignment, and then clicking on the upper right corner on the little button that says "view feedback". You should also be able to see the rubric scores from this view as well. If you are able to revise, use the feedback to revise the essay. If there is a rubric, look at the top score criteria, and when you revise, try to incorporate the elements of the top score in your revision. If you are not able to revise, look at the rubric and the feedback to understand what you can do differently to improve the next assignment that you write.

Duo for Canvas Access (click to reveal)

Two-factor authentication for Canvas

IT@UC uses Duo Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Canvas.

Duo will push a notification to your phone asking you to approve or deny access each time you login to Canvas. Once you verify your identity on your phone with Duo, you’ll be securely logged into Canvas.

The Office of Information Security recommends you follow these time-saving security tips:

❶ Choose “Send Me a Push” in the Duo Mobile App for the quickest, most user-friendly experience.

❷ Use “Remember me” to log into Canvas with Duo once a month (instead of…Every. Single. Time.)

Canvas Basics Video

Canvas will house our course materials, assignments, and quizzes for the semester. You will also be able to access your grades through the Canvas gradebook. You can log on to Canvas by going to canopy.uc.edu; click the My Courses tile. When Canvas opens you will be on your Dashboard. Click the tile with our course name to enter our course site.

You can also access Canvas from your phone. Use your phone’s app store to download Canvas Student. You will then select the University of Cincinnati and use your UC login information to log in. You can use the icons on the bottom and the menus located in the pancake icon (three lines) in the top left to navigate courses.

Time Zones in Canvas

All due dates/times for this course will be listed in Eastern Time. If you are living in a different time zone, you can update settings in Canvas to allow due dates/times to display in your local time. To change your time zone in Canvas, click Account in the left menu bar, then Settings, and Edit Settings. In the Time Zone drop-down, select your local time zone and then click Update Setting. You can find detailed instructions with screenshots here.

Teams (click to reveal)

Teams Basics Video

This course will use Microsoft Teams for our class sessions. You can access Teams by clicking the icon that looks like a waffle (nine dots) at the top left of your UC email account, and then clicking Teams. If you do not see Teams in the list, click All Apps and select Teams. Once you are in the web version of Teams, you will have the option of downloading the desktop version to your computer. This is not required; you can continue to access Teams from your email. However, the desktop version of Teams will offer more stability and is recommended.

After you open Teams, you will be able to find your courses by clicking the Teams icon on the far left. You will see our course in the Teams section. Clicking the course tile will open the Team for our course. You can view and join scheduled class sessions/meetings in the Calendar section of Teams. Click Calendar on the far left and then look for the meeting on its assigned date in your Calendar. To join, click the meeting in the calendar and then click Join.

After you click Join in Teams, you will be taken to a screen where you can adjust your microphone and camera settings before fully entering the meeting; click PC Mic and Speakers to make adjustments. It is best to enter any meeting with your microphone muted; you can mute your microphone on this screen. After making adjustments, click Join Now.

You can also access Teams from your phone. Use your phone’s app store to download Microsoft Teams. You will then use your UC login information to log in. You can use the icons on the bottom of the phone app to navigate Teams as you would online.

Academic misconduct: suggested (optional) messaging to students

Chegg, Course Hero, and similar online learning platforms are used by students nationwide for online tutoring support, textbook rental and e-books, homework support, study guides, and overall academic help. These and similar platforms may support learning when used in accordance with academic integrity guidelines These services should never be used as a means of cheating on assignments or exams, or otherwise violating UC’s academic integrity guidelines. Uploading an instructor’s intellectual property, materials from an instructor's exams or quiz, or other course related materials could lead to disciplinary action. If you have questions on the appropriate use of course materials, ask your instructor. If a report is received from an instructor citing suspicion of inappropriate use of these platforms, the instructor may inform the UC Blue Ash College Conduct Administrator, and an investigation may take place with the online platforms (Chegg/Course Hero etc.) to determine if course materials were inappropriately posted or accessed

Allegations of academic misconduct pertaining to such behavior have risen substantially during the 2020-2021 academic year – and especially in spring 2021 - at UC and at colleges around the country. We urge students to avoid posting or access course materials in manners that could result in allegations of academic misconduct. Again - if you have questions or need clarification regarding legitimate posting or access of course materials, we encourage you to ask your course instructor.

As a reminder and per the University of Cincinnati Student Code of Conduct any of the following behaviors could result in an allegation of academic misconduct

(a) Aiding and abetting academic misconduct

Knowingly helping, procuring or encouraging another person to engage in academic misconduct.

(b) Cheating

Any dishonesty or deception in fulfilling an academic requirement such as:

(I) Use or possession of unauthorized material or technological devices.

(ii) Obtaining unauthorized assistance or accessing, reviewing, or obtaining answers from another person or source.

(iii) Furnishing unauthorized assistance or answers to another person.

(iv) Possessing, using, distributing, or selling unauthorized copies of academic materials.

(v) Representing academic work by another person as one’s own.

(vi) Doing academic work in place of another person.

(vii) Obtaining unauthorized access to the computer files of another person or agency or altering or destroying those files.

(c) Fabrication

The falsification of any information, research statistics, lab data, or citation in an academic exercise.

(d) Plagiarism

(I) Submitting another’s published or unpublished work in whole, in part, or in paraphrase, as one’s own without fully and properly crediting the author with footnotes, quotation marks, citations, or bibliographic references.

(ii) Submitting as one’s own original work, material obtained from an individual, agency, or the internet without reference to the person, agency, or webpage as the source of the material.

(iii) Submitting as one’s own original work material that has been produced through unacknowledged collaboration with others without release in writing from collaborators.

(iv) Submitting one’s own previously written, oral, or creative work without modification and instructor permission.

(e) Violating ethical or professional standards

Violations of any ethical or professional standards as outlined by the academic college.

As final exams and projects approach, we encourage you to – as always – exercise self-care, study and learn with diligence and uphold Bearcat integrity and pride in your academic efforts.

Online Courses

Online Engagement (click to reveal)

As this is an online class, measuring your engagement with the class is different than a face-to-face course. You are expected to complete all assignments and engage in discussions on a regular basis. Make sure you set aside the time for the course! Online courses can be deceptive because they still take the same amount of time commitment as any other course. If you are not keeping up with the material, please contact me as soon as possible. At the end of the term, I will assign you a course engagement grade following this general rubric:

Submits all assignments on time and participates in all discussions in an engaged and timely manner.
Some late assignments but generally strong engagement in discussions.
Late assignments and discussion engagement are generally lacking. Does the bare minimum, but no more.
Does not meet the minimum of discussion engagement and a significant amount of late assignments.

Online Class Session Etiquette (click to reveal)

In this course, you will be required to attend live online class sessions. Even though we are not in the physical classroom, you should plan to engage in class using typical classroom expectations. Here are some specific tips:

Do your best to find a quiet, private, distraction-free space for the duration of the class session. Let people who are around know that you are in class so they won't disturb you.
Close applications on your device that you do not need to use in the class session. The more programs and browser windows you have open, the more likely you will have technical issues during the class.
Dress appropriately for the class session. If your outfit wouldn’t be appropriate in the physical classroom, it’s probably not appropriate for the online classroom.
Consider using a headset or headphones with a microphone that connects to your computer with a cord. Avoid Bluetooth headphones, as they may accidentally disconnect.
Mute your microphone before entering the class session and leave it muted when you are not speaking.
Check with your instructor to find out if they want your video muted or on. If you are not able to show video for any reason, check with your instructor before class begins so that they know about your situation.
If you have a question, please type it in the chat function.
If the instructor asks a question, please click the “raise hand” icon and wait until you are called on to unmute.
Do not share the class link with other people. Only those registered for the course should be in attendance. Sharing the link threatens the safety and privacy of other students.

If you are using Zoom, consider adding these:

You should use your full name. To change your name, open participants, hover over your name, click more, and click Rename.
To use a virtual background, click the carrot icon (^) on Video in the bottom left. Then select Choose Virtual Background. Please use a background that is appropriate for a classroom setting, and do not use a background that is likely to be distracting to others. Please note that this option many not be available to you due to computer spec requirements.

If you are using Teams, consider adding this:

To use a virtual background, before you enter the meeting, click the middle icon (person with lines behind it) on the Join Now screen (this will only be an option if your video is turned on). This will open blurring and background options. Select a background effect and click Apply. Once in a meeting, click the three dots on the bottom toolbar. Click “Show Background Effects.” Select a background effect and click Apply. Please use a background that is appropriate for a classroom setting, and do not use a background that may be distracting to others.
