Learning Kaltura?
Kaltura is UC's enterprise video content creation, streaming, and video repository tool. You can record and/or upload videos, including screencasts of PowerPoints and yourself using a camera, using Kaltura Capture.
Kaltura is available within Canvas and college Kaltura MediaSpace (KMS) sites, and as a stand-alone video creation software option (Kaltura Capture). Students, faculty, and staff can upload existing videos to Kaltura’s repository. Videos can be recorded via Kaltura Capture and uploaded into Canvas. All colleges at UC also have a public-facing Kaltura MediaSpace (KMS) page, very similar to organizational pages on YouTube. There are specific KMS sites per college (Blue Ash's Kaltura MediaSpace Links to an external site. and other college's Kaltura MediaSpaces Links to an external site. if UCBA is not your home college), where you can select "My Media" after logging in with your UC credentials to access your Kaltura recordings (including Zoom recordings).
- To record and/or upload a Kaltura video to Canvas, follow these instructions to launch and use Kaltura Capture via Canvas Links to an external site. using "My Media" in Canvas' global navigation.
- Then select the “starburst” Kaltura icon to embed the video on a Canvas page, assignment, discussion, etc

For example, let's say you mispronounce a term and you want to edit that out. Wait about 10 seconds before beginning again. This will leave a blank section in your video, so you can easily find where you need to edit.

Machine captions
All videos uploaded to Kaltura on or after April 30, 2024 will have machine captions (English) automatically generated. To order free machine captions for videos uploaded prior to April 30, 2024, please follow these request ASR captions Links to an external site. instructions.
To order free machine captions for content that is not in English, follow these request automatic speech recognition (ASR) captions for foreign languages Links to an external site. instructions.
Machine captions are only guaranteed to be up to 70-80% correct. This means you will likely need to edit the captions generated by Kaltura. To edit existing captions, follow these editing captions Links to an external site. instructions.
Professional captions
If a student has an Accessibility Resources accommodation for captioning, you will receive information on how to get professional captions added to your video. If you have questions about professional captions, please reach out to the Digital Access Team.
Creating Kaltura Video Quizzes?
Kaltura offers Interactive Video Quizzing, which allows you to embed quiz questions at any point in a Kaltura video. As students watch the video, the questions will appear at the chosen points in time. The video continues after each question is answered. Flexible settings allow you to choose whether viewers can repeat sections, skip questions, revise answers, get hints, allow multiple attempts or discover the correct answers. This allows Interactive Video Quizzing to be used to increase engagement, test knowledge and retention, and to gather data.

Then you can either:
- Select the “starburst” Kaltura icon to embed the video on a Canvas page, assignment, discussion, etc, or
- If you want the score to automatically go into the Canvas gradebook, you must follow a specific process for adding the video to an assignment Links to an external site.. You cannot embed it using the process listed above.

Other features and details!
- Using Kaltura video analytics Links to an external site., you can find out which students are watching your videos, for how long, etc. It is possible for a student to watch a video and it to not be recorded within analytics. Usually this is due to a students browser settings. Digital Technology Solutions (DTS) can help address this for the student.
- You can use the Kaltura phone app to upload videos.
- You can use Kaltura Express (a browser-based recording program that allows you to record either your webcam + audio or audio only) which works from any laptop, including Chromebooks.
