Course Description and Overview

Personal Finance 101 is an online course designed for high school students in 11th and 12th grade. The course will cover the basics of personal finance and provide students with the skills they need to make well-informed decisions about financial obstacles. This course will cover topics about financial planning, spending, saving, investing, budgeting, and student loans.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Students will apply decision-making skills to set personal finance goals.
  2. Students will communicate effectively using terminology relevant to personal finance.
  3. Students will demonstrate how to use a budget for earning, spending, and saving.
  4. Students will examine the reasons for spending and saving.
  5. Students will compare the advantages and disadvantages of different types of student loans.

Textbook

There is no required textbook for this online course.

Course Schedule

Class runs Monday-Friday

The curriculum is built through three modules. Modules will be completed in the following order and you will be given a week to complete each module and the module needs to be completed by Friday at 11:59 p.m. of every week.

This module will break down key terms in budgeting. Students will analyze real-world budgets to help them create a budget using Microsoft excel. Terms to be covered:

Student Loans

This module will teach students about student loans. During this module, students will research different types of loans to understand what choices regarding student loans they should make. Terms to be covered:

All assignments are due at 11:59 pm on Friday.

All work MUST be your own.

Each assignment will be graded as follows:

Discussion Board Activity 1 – 10 pts

Quiz 1 – 10 pts

Course Policies

All assignments will be due by 11:59 PM on Friday. If a student submits an assignment after the due date, 5 points will be automatically deducted. If an assignment is more than one week late a grade of zero will be given.
