Books & Ebooks

This type of resource is rather obvious. Books (sometimes called monographs) at our library can be found in print on the shelves or online through a variety of electronic book resources. To locate this type of resource use the Books tab of Summon (the big red search box) and search by title, author, or topic.

that you have access to even more books through OhioLINK?
many of our ebooks are housed in subject specific platforms such as AccessMedicine, Credo Reference, and Safari Books Online - meaning that if you are in need of a subject specific ebook it may be best to start with one of these options.

Journals or Ejournals

Again a rather obvious resource type. Journals (and Ejournals) sometimes called periodicals range from popular magazines to scholarly journals. These resources can be found by using the Journals tab of Summon (the big red search box) and by searching with the journal title or ISSN.

However did you know...

Many UC library locations continue to have available older issues of Journals. So if you are in need of an older volume or article you may be able to find a print copy in one of our libraries.
Articles of many many journals can be found and accessed through our library databases (which will be covered below).

Databases

Library Databases are online collections of information and tend to be subject specific (think PsycINFO, PubMed, or Abstracts in Anthropology) and for which the library pays. This information can range from sound recordings and videos to conference proceedings and scholarly articles. It is important to remember that although information is indexed in a database you may NOT have access to the full text (e.g. PDF), video, etc.

Did you know...

The library has access to over 750 databases. These can be explored by subject and database type.
It is important to choose the APPROPRIATE database. If you are wanting scholarly articles on medieval European dance practices you will not want to choose PubMed as your database. Likewise if you are needing information on patient falls in nursing homes you will not want to choose Aerospace database.

Point of Care Resources

Point of Care Resources are those information sources that health care workers can utilize at a patients bedside or where care is needed. These tools are geared solely towards medical, nursing, pharmacy, and other health workers.

Did you know...

The library subscribes to a variety of point of care resources such as: Lexicomp, DynaMed Plus, and Nursing Reference Center Plus. Choose the appropriate resource based on your information needs --> Lexicomp: pharmaceutical information, DynaMed Plus: clinical questions, Nursing Reference Center Plus: drug information, patient guidelines.

Archives

Archives are collections of historical documents that can range from letters and photographs to diaries and unique objects (the Winkler Center has a collection of glass eyeballs). Archives can include primary resources that can be highly useful when conducting research.

However, did you know...

The University of Cincinnati Libraries has two unique archival libraries - The Archives and Rare Books that specializes in University Archives, Local Government records, Urban Studies collection, and German-Americana collection and the Winkler Center that focuses on the history of the health sciences primarily in the Cincinnati area.

Libguides

Libguides are one stop shops of specialized information for either a course, topic, or subject area. These are created and maintained by librarians and are geared towards reducing clicks and helping you access the needed resources quickly. There are currently over 500 libguides and these can be searched through by Subject, Library, or Type.

There is most likely a libguide for your subject area that will direct you to subject specific ebooks, databases, and more
There are libguides to help you with using citation managers, writing systematic reviews and annotated bibliographies, finding patents, and getting started with research

Other

The Other category is extremely large. This can include social media posts, dissertations and theses, dictionaries and references materials, handbooks, and so much more.
