Filtering Results & Accessing Full Text

Using Filters

Using filters will reduce the number of search results and help focus the search. PubMed's filters include but are not limited to:

  • Year
  • Article Type
  • Publication date (by range or by # of years ago)
  • Species
  • Language
  • Sex
  • Subject Journal
  • Age

To access the full availability of filters, scroll down until you can see on the bottom left the button for 'Additional Filters'. After clicking 'Additional Filters', select which ones you would like to be visible on the result page. This will not apply the filter, it will now be visible on your results page to select.

Remember:

  • Using the filters for Text Availability can remove results to which the library subscribes. It is best to use the UC Article Linker Button, located on each article page, to see if the full text is available. See the next section below for more details on Accessing the Full Text.
  • PubMed's filters will be applied to each new search unless they are removed. So, remember to ‘Clear All’ (located at the top of the result page) when you no longer need the filters that you have used.

Select Clear All to remove filters.

  • After adding more filters from 'Additional Filters', select a filter you'd like to apply to your search results such as an age group.

Accessing Full Text Articles

To access the full text articles in the journals to which the library subscribes, use the UC Article Linker button located in the Abstract view of each article citation. Click on the button and go directly to the full text if it is available.

The UC Article Linker Button is located on the right side under the Full Text Links.

If the full text is unavailable, a screen similar to this one appears:

If the full text is unavailable, you will be redirected to a page with an option to request a copy of the article through Interlibrary Loan.

To request an article, select 'Interlibrary Loan Form - HSL Users' and follow the prompts. For more help on using the HSL Interlibrary Loan see our policies and FAQs. Links to an external site.
